Former students support the Sol Gittleman Professorship

Sol Gittleman has a remarkable way of integrating history, culture, religion, and music into his literature classes. That's how Michael Lainoff, A84, remembers Sol's lectures - as "enjoying every minute." Even now, he says, he never misses the chance to hear Sol when he is in town as the featured speaker at a Washington, D.C., alumni chapter event. Lainoff says his lectures are "spectacular."

Appointed the Alice and Nathan Gantcher University Professor in 2003, Sol best exemplifies how faculty at Tufts create a thriving and vibrant academic environment that begins freshman year and lasts a lifetime.

To honor Sol, The Gittleman Endowment for Excellence in Teaching was established to support faculty development and create an endowed professorship. "Sol was one of my favorite teachers, if not my favorite, and giving to this fund provides a natural way for me to thank and recognize him," says Lainoff, who also reflected on how helpful and kind Sol has been to him during the more difficult times in his life at Tufts and after graduation.

"Honoring Sol by helping to endow a professorship is an appropriate legacy since Sol has given decades of outstanding service to the school and inspired me to love learning for learning's sake," Lainoff says. Endowed professorships also elevate the quality of faculty, which in turn attracts the most talented students, a key priority in Beyond Boundaries: The Campaign for Tufts.

Sol marks two very significant personal milestones this spring - his 45th year at Tufts and his 75th birthday. He will present one of his "Classic Sol" lectures as part of this year's Super Seminars during Alumni Weekend, which provides a great opportunity for us to celebrate and participate in a special way.

Thousands of students and hundreds of faculty members have benefited from Sol's special brand of teaching and mentoring, his genuine care for others, and his ability to instill knowledge that far outlives any final exam. Alumni are invited to honor Sol with contributions to this fund, which will extend his impact and recognize his unwavering commitment to excellence in teaching at Tufts University, an institution committed to excellence in educating today's students, and tomorrow's leaders.
