Spotlighting the Murrow Center

The Edward R. Murrow Center for Public Diplomacy was established at the Fletcher School in 1965 in memory of the man whose distinguished reporting and analysis of world news and imaginative leadership of the United States Information Agency set a standard of excellence and credibility.

The Murrow Center was meant to be an active place, reflective of Murrow himself and his work. Murrow's library and papers - more than 2,000 documents - are housed in the Murrow Memorial Room, which also serves as a special seminar classroom and meeting room for Fletcher School activities. Fletcher also stewards a collection of Murrow tape recordings and select video footage.

So far, however, this has remained largely hidden treasure.

Recognition of the centrality of public diplomacy and effective communication across cultures makes this an especially auspicious time to revisit and revitalize the original purpose of the Murrow Center as integral part of Fletcher for study, outreach, global understanding and international communication: the "go-to" place for the study of global public diplomacy.

Fletcher's upcoming capital campaign will seek to raise funds for the following:

Edward R. Murrow Professor of Public Diplomacy$3.0M
Approximately $500,000 already has been raised to endow this professorship. Another $2.5 million in endowment funds is sought to support a succession of distinguished outstanding scholars and practitioners in public diplomacy. The professorship could be a tenure-track or visiting appointment.
Murrow Center Director $1.8M
Endowed or expendable funds are sought to allow Fletcher to engage a full-time director for the Center who is both administrator and champion. Budget: $75,000 to $100,000 per year ($1.8 million endowment).
Digitizing Murrow Tapes$200,000
Expendable funds are sought to allow Fletcher to digitize the entire collection of tapes given Fletcher by the Murrow Estate. Budget: $200,000
Programming $500,000
An annual Conference on Public Diplomacy; a Murrow Fellowship for the early or mid-career practitioner in public diplomacy, an annual career trip for Fletcher students to Washington, London, or another world capital; and a distinguished speaker series are among envisioned offerings. Programming Budget:
Conference: $50,000 annual cost ($1.2 million endowment)
Fellow: $40,000 annual cost ($1 million endowment)
Field trip: $10,000 annual cost ($250,000 endowment)
Speakers series: $10,000 annual cost ($250,000 endowment)
