Pulling Together for a New Boathouse

A $2-million boathouse to be completed on the Malden River in Medford in the coming year will give Tufts rowers at long last a home of their own. Rowing has become one of the schoolís most popular athletic programs, with the menís and womenís crews powered by some of the universityís finest and most dedicated scholar athletes. In 2005, the Tufts women raced in the Henley Royal Regatta and won a Grand Final in the senior eights at the Reading Amateur Regatta in England.

Until now, these talented Tufts rowers have not had their own boathouse. First, rowers , practiced out of rented space in a Harvard boathouse on the Charles, and then moved to pitched tents on the less congested Malden River in 2001.

The new two-story, wood-and-brick boathouse is a centerpiece of the revival of the Malden River, which flows through Everett, Malden and Medford to a confluence with the Mystic River. The boathouse project is welcomed by the three cities, which are teaming on a transformation of 200 acres of industrial land on both sides of the river.

The boathouse also is seen as offering a valuable community resource. The top floor will be made available for community meetings, and Tufts plans to work with the three cities to develop local rowing programs and high-school crew teams.
