Today’s physician must be a master of many universes: at ease in the sub-cellular realms of DNA, as well as in a community clinic; adept at computerized virtual reality; conversant in the fiscal realities of managed care. In light of these challenges, we must forge a new, “translational” approach to medical education. This approach to education will integrate basic and clinical sciences with best practices, and will require the most talented and dedicated students to master it. Our efforts will focus on processes, supported by innovative informatics and other tools that provide the rigorous and dynamic training necessary for our future physicians. Our plan includes revision of the medical education program, as well as investments in our teaching spaces and facilities.

Developing distinctive capabilities in research $52M

We believe that we will have the greatest impact on human healing by focusing on our areas of strength and building on the opportunities they offer us. We have distinctive capabilities in four research areas and will strive to reach top-10 status in at least three of these areas over the next decade. Areas of disease-specific research strength are: infectious disease, neuroscience sensory and disease biology, cancer, and heart disease.

TUSM Clinical department chairs: $9M
Academic headquarters at TUSM: $6M
Academic Centers at Teaching Hospitals: $2.5M
Clinical research support and seed funding: $4.5M

The importance of the synergy and interdependency that flourishes between TUSM and our affiliated teaching hospitals cannot be overestimated. The “classrooms” in which our medical students have their earliest experiences in caring for patients – where they truly learn to become physicians – are the 14 affiliated Tufts teaching hospitals. Our goal is to strengthen these vital partnerships. With campaign support we can work with our teaching hospitals to help them meet their own goals in patient care and clinical research while ensuring and maintaining clinical expertise to meet the School of Medicine’s education and research objectives.
