President's Message
Dear friends,
Tufts was founded on a Hill – a prospect that tends to lift one's eyes to the horizon. Today we look out on a world whose signature challenges seem at once urgent and intractable: Terrorism and the proliferation of nuclear weapons. Global climate change and drought. AIDS and other pandemic diseases. The horror of genocide. The science and ethics of bioengineering and stem cell research. Obesity in America, and famine in Africa. Searing conflict in the Middle East. And the evolving reality of globalization – not only in its economic and geopolitical dimensions, but in terms of our connection to each other.
It's easy to feel overwhelmed by it all.
But not if you're at Tufts.
Why? Because, without fanfare, this community is helping to forge innovative answers to every one of these serious human challenges. We have a growing pool of talent across a unique array of increasingly interconnected fields. We have a rare culture of collegiality that fosters the kind of unexpected collaborations that today's great intellectual questions require. We have the breadth of understanding that flows naturally from the liberal arts. And we have an attitude – positive, nimble, forward-looking and socially engaged – that makes it possible to face even the most daunting problems with the faith that we can make a difference.
With quiet determination, Tufts is already making a serious difference in the world; with your help, through this ambitious campaign, I know we can do much more. It is humbling to lead an institution of such strength and potential – and thrilling to imagine where we're headed next.
I hope you will join us on the pioneering journey ahead.
Sincerely,
Lawrence S. Bacow
President
